Anchorage Country Store – A Gathering Place Then and Now

The Anchorage Country Store (1404 Evergreen Rd , Anchorage, KY 40223), now home to Shall We Dance, has long been a cornerstone of community life in Anchorage. Originally built as a traditional country store, the first floor served as a local grocery where residents could purchase daily essentials—everything from canned goods and produce to household staples. Above the store, a cozy living space was used by the shopkeepers, a common arrangement that blended business and home life during that era.

As the community grew, a welcoming front porch was added to the building, transforming the store into a true social hub. Neighbors would gather here to catch up on local news, children would enjoy a soda or snack, and the porch became a place where generations of Anchorage citizens shared stories, laughter, and a strong sense of connection.

Over the years, the building adapted to meet the evolving needs of the town. It later housed a florist shop, bringing vibrant color and life to the space, followed by a branch of Commonwealth Bank, continuing its tradition of serving the community in a new capacity.

Today, as home to Shall We Dance, the building once again lives up to its legacy as a place where people come together. With dance, music, and movement filling its historic walls, it continues to bring joy and connection to the heart of Anchorage—proving that while its purpose may evolve, its spirit as a gathering place endures.
