MCNALLY COLEMAN HOUSE
The McNally Coleman House – A Storied Anchorage Landmark
Now home to Whet Your Palette, a vibrant local art studio, the McNally Coleman House (1415 Evergreen Rd, Anchorage, KY 40223) is one of Anchorage’s most charming and storied historic properties. Located in the heart of the community, the property has seen many transformations over the years—each one reflecting a different chapter in the town’s evolving identity.
Originally, the land served as a nursery, likely providing trees, shrubs, and plants to the growing number of homes and estates in the area. As Anchorage became a stop on the interurban railway line, the property transitioned into a practical service point for commuters—it became known as a stock pound, a place where residents traveling by train into Louisville could leave their horses during the day. This unique piece of history reflects the rural-meets-modern character of early 20th-century Anchorage.
The current stone house that stands today later became the longtime residence of Mrs. Coleman, the community’s devoted postmistress. Known for her service, dependability, and kind demeanor, Mrs. Coleman became a beloved figure in Anchorage. In recognition of her lifelong contributions, she was honored as Outstanding Citizen on her 100th birthday—a testament to the lasting impact she had on generations of residents.
Today, the McNally Coleman House continues its legacy as a place of creativity and connection. As the home of Whet Your Palette, it welcomes visitors of all ages to explore their artistic side in a space filled with warmth, history, and community spirit. From horses and postage to paintbrushes and laughter, this house remains a living part of Anchorage’s vibrant story.
